Luminaries for Outdoor Use Only
Materials:
Paper
sandwich paper bags
- Brown or White
Sand or kitty litter to weight down luminary - can also use a
rock
Small candles
The Concept:
Place sand or kitty litter in the bottom of the bag.
Roll down the top of the bag rolling it down
towards the outside of the bag. The height
should be 5-8 inches, if it is wind outside 5-6
should be good. Now place a candle on the sand and light candle.
Place outside lining your driveway or sidewalk.
Safety First:
Added safety, the sand and kitty litter are used
the ensure that the paper bag does not catch on
fire. Luminaries work best on place on snow and
ice and used when there is little or no ice.
Live in a warmer climate - Try this safety idea.
Instead of sand, take a small container, one
that fits in the bag and 1-2 inches high, and
fill with water and freeze. Then when you are
ready to set out your luminaries, place the
container with ice in the bag, place the votive
in the middle of the ice and light. >> If
the candle gets to hot, the ice will melt and
put it out. <<
Design Options: For Something Different
Paper Bags - Regular brown or colored
- Decorate the bags, have kids draw pictures on
them, trace stars or holiday symbols.
- Double bag - use 2 bags, we recommend 1 brown
and 1 white bag. Cut out stars, symbols, or
repeating patterns in 1 of the bags. This will
be the outer bag. This creates a really unique
effect to your luminary.
- Use a hole punch to make a snowing effect -
Use at the top of the bag as holes at the bottom
could put the candle out!
Symbol Ideas:
Use common Christmas shapes such as Santa, sleighs, Christmas trees,
stockings, and snowflakes. For kids trace shapes from cookie cutters.
Have fun and enjoy!
